What should I attend at EUSEW 2024?

From Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 June, Brussels will host the 18th edition of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). This year the theme is ‘Net-zero energy solutions for a competitive Europe’. In this article, BUILD UP sums up the keynote speeches, and main sessions related to energy efficiency in buildings for our community.

From Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 June, Brussels will host the 18th edition of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). This year the theme is ‘Net-zero energy solutions for a competitive Europe’. In this article, BUILD UP sums up the keynote speeches, and main sessions related to energy efficiency in buildings for our community.

With the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) organises Europe's biggest annual event dedicated to sustainable energy and energy efficiency. Through a series of activities across Europe, it brings together policymakers, stakeholders and citizens to achieve climate and energy goals for the Energy Union.

This year’s theme ‘Net-zero energy solutions for a competitive Europe’, is brought by more than 60 policy sessions, 7 plenaries, Energy Fair stands, the announcement of the European Sustainable Energy Awards (EUSEW Awards) and the 5th edition of the European Youth Energy Day, spread over three days. CINEA translated this year's theme into five main thematic areas:  

  • Net-zero technologies, e.g. net-zero technologies and solutions, raw materials, competitiveness, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), etc.

  • Cities and citizens, e.g. local leadership, Sustainable Energy and Climate. Action Plans (SECAPs), energy affordability, inclusion, energy communities, behavioural change, etc.

  • Renewables, e.g. permitting, tendering, community participation, technologies, renewable energy sources (RES) in transport and industry, etc.

  • Energy efficiency, e.g. reduction of energy demand, energy performance of buildings, products, industry, transport, financing, heating and cooling, heat pumps, etc.

  • International cooperation and decarbonisation, e.g. Green Deal measures, National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2024 (UNFCCC COP29), Emissions Trading System.

With this programme, EUSEW 2024 is set to be at the forefront of the discussion on energy transition!

EUSEW 2024 is a hybrid event. You can participate both in Brussels (in the European Commission's Charlemagne building and the Martin's Brussels EU Hotel) and online. Onsite participants will have opportunities to network and connect with fellow professionals and energy enthusiasts.

Energy Efficiency Policy

Tuesday 11 June: 

14.00 – 14.30: Keynote Speech on net-zero energy solutions for a competitive Europe

This session will introduce this year’s main theme of the European Sustainable Energy Week and reflect on how to scale-up the development of climate neutral solutions for Europe’s industrial competitiveness, and to ensure Europe’s supply of components and technologies to support the clean energy transition.

14.30 – 16.00: Implementing the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast

In this session, the Energy Performance of Buildings Center and the Next Gen EPC cluster, in collaboration with EPBD.wise, aim to address the EU-wide transposition and practical implementation challenges of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive Recast. It will explore the complexities involved in aligning diverse legal and regulatory frameworks across EU member states, integrating multiple stakeholder inputs, ensuring practicality and feasibility, harmonising efforts, and effectively disseminating information. 

The Build Up Portal will be highlighted as a key resource for accessing comprehensive Energy Performance of Buildings Directive guidance documents and other resources to support stakeholders.

Wednesday 12 June: 

11.30 – 13.00: Who said energy efficiency is boring? Join a lively contest with REFEREE, the new policy simulator 

Join 4 experts in crafting the perfect energy-saving policy mix for an EU nation in this interactive session. They will use REFEREE, a cutting-edge tool to simulate energy efficiency measures and gauge their impacts. In addition to demonstrating the tool, the experts aim to raise awareness about the potential of energy efficiency to boost socioeconomic development, welfare, air quality, jobs, and more.

11.30 – 13.00: Breaking down the barriers to carbon capture and storage (Online only)

Carbon capture and storage as well as negative emissions are key for the achievement of a net-zero economy by 2050. The Commission stresses the need to deploy the necessary infrastructure. With the 2040 Climate Target being set, it is important to understand how much carbon capture and storage should be deployed in Europe to absorb emissions and what the barriers to their deployment are. 

This session calls upon EU policymakers and civil society to summarise concrete practical issues and policy suggestions for how these challenges could be addressed.

14.30 – 16.00: The role of Net-Zero Academies in developing renewable energy skills 

During the European Year of Skills, the Renewable Energy Skills Large Partnership identified policy priorities for successful European Net-Zero Industry Academies. They will be presented with specific lessons from sub-sectors, all to better frame future EU action.

Thursday 13 June: 

9.30 – 11.00: Multilevel governance: addressing energy poverty in the energy transition era

The session takes a grassroots approach to effective multi-level governance strategies by facilitating the integration of local knowledge, expertise and initiatives into the broader national and EU climate goals and policies. The focus will be on how to best address energy poverty, including the importance of collaboration and coordination between local, regional, national, and EU institutions.

9.30 – 11.00: Keynote speech on energy efficiency and renewables

An impactful speech introducing the EU’s priorities for reducing energy consumption and increasing the development of renewable energy across the Union. EU energy efficiency measures focus on policy areas with the greatest potential for energy savings and where a harmonised approach across EU countries is needed. This includes, among others, the public sector and the construction and renovation of buildings.

16.00 –  17.30: Interoperability and sovereignty: sharing a European energy data space

After a keynote from the European Commission, an overview of the data needs in different sectors is given and compared with the audience's experience. In a panel discussion with representatives from energy data space projects and the smart energy expert working group, energy data spaces and the necessary next steps will be in the focus.

 

Building Renovation

Tuesday 11 June:

16.30 – 18.00: How the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive is driving renovation for all

The session will present insights from the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive negotiation process while also showcasing experiences and challenges from those already working on putting the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in place.

Wednesday 12 June: 

9.30 – 11.00: Less is more? Overview of sufficiency policies as supplementary policy to reduce emissions and increase quality of life

Sufficiency policies aim to achieve EU climate goals, decent housing and affordable energy for all. New research shows how sufficiency policies can reduce emissions and increase well-being. This session covers results, impact quantification, National Energy and Climate Plan recommendations, and political commentary.

14.30 – 16.00: On the way to the 2040 climate targets: challenges and opportunities in the energy transition

This session will look at how the EU can achieve its climate objectives, focusing on the challenges and opportunities related to reduction and mitigation of gas emissions. As heating and domestic hot water accounts for 80% of household energy use in the EU, renovation of buildings, their systems and improving the systems´ integration of heating, becomes pivotal to decarbonise them and make them more energy efficient.

14.30 – 16.00: Joining forces to scale up energy renovation

While at the forefront of changing Europe to become more sustainable and competitive, the fragmented nature of the energy efficiency sector could slow down large-scale efforts needed to renovate the EU building stock. Speakers will discuss how to bring industry stakeholders across the whole renovation value chain together under a buildings partnership to complement and support national buildings policies and renovation programs.

14.30 – 16.00: Renovation for all: Financing renovation - solutions for low-income households and worst-performing housing stock (Online only) 

This session aims to explore the financial challenges and opportunities of renovating the worst-performing building stock, to define tailor-made solutions for low-income households living in unfit housing. 

16.30 – 18.00: Citizen-led initiatives for renovation

Following the recent recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), the EU has set ambitious renovation targets for residential buildings. The Support Service for Citizen-Led Renovation explores ways to support a successful implementation. It will provide guidance for policy makers and build a network of on-the-ground initiatives which provide lessons learned and best practices on which enabling national regulation can be built.

This session will explore the potential of citizen-led renovation in empowering citizens and communities, to accelerate energy renovations as a key component in achieving the EU’s climate and energy targets. It will zoom in on of the Life IP BE REEL project, to explain the crucial role local authorities play in enabling and supporting citizen-led renovation actions. 

Thursday 13 June: 

9.30 – 11.00: Turn the finance on! How policy can switch on finance flows for Europe’s green home revolution

With renovation costs estimated at €275 billion per year, public financing will not meet the demand of Europe's renovation wave, but the perception of high asset risk and significant borrowing costs limit the interest of private finance players. How can Europe ensure that a deep energy renovation wave can be financed?

This EUSEW Policy Session brings together practitioners from across finance and housing to explore what is already working, and what we need more of at national and European level to increase the attractiveness of renovation financing.

 

Renewable Energy Sources (RES)

Tuesday 11 June:

14.30 – 16.00.: Solar talks: getting the most out of your roof

As heat represents 80% of the energy needs for residential buildings, this interactive session will address the topic of heat decarbonisation for buildings through solar thermal energy and technology.

16.30 – 18.00: Pioneering solutions for renewable energy sources  

The European Innovation Council’s (EIC) Green Deal portfolio introduces in this session several start-ups and SMEs as well as their innovation journeys, among which Brite Solar. Brite Solar is a nanomaterials company that develops innovative materials and deposition techniques for the production of i.a. solar panel glass that generates clean energy for building construction.

Wednesday 12 June: 

9.30 – 11.00: Collaboration versus competition: promoting a faster, just, and clean energy transition (Online only)

The objective of the session is to discuss the pivotal role of local renewable energy initiatives in contributing to net zero solutions fostering a just and faster energy transition.

11.30 – 13.00: Solutions for energy efficiency and renewables by small and medium-sized enterprises: Yes we can!

The Sector Group Renewable Energy of the Enterprise Europe Network organises this session to showcase a wide array of renewable energy solutions, from production on the one hand, to energy efficiency solutions on the other.

9.30 – 11.00.: Energy storage + renewables: the proven formula in action

The session addresses how replicating successful business cases can facilitate integration and optimal performance of storage and renewables, and explore how industry, government and financial sector can work together to expedite funding and propel the energy transition.

Thursday 13 June:

14.00 – 15.30: Less is more: empowering net-zero strategies by a reduced energy demand

The potential of shifting to renewables in the Clean Energy Transition (CET) is clear. Yet, the untapped potential of energy demand reduction (EDR) strategies remains. 

Energy-efficiency strategies can slow growth in energy demand and play a vital role in reducing fossil fuel consumption and emissions in all sectors of the economy.. This includes the buildings sector, which is the largest source of energy consumption in Europe. In addition, the session explores how EDR can boost also a renewables-driven CET and support the EU's climate goals

 

Energy efficiency technologies and solutions

Wednesday 12 June:

9.30 – 11.00: When challenge meets opportunity: heat pumps and electricity grids

To ensure grid capacity does not constitute a barrier to heat pumps’ deployment, cooperation between heat pumps’ manufacturers and grid operators is needed. In addition, this session highlights the need for more heat pumps with an opportunity for flexibility and renewables integration.

11.30 – 13.00: Pioneering solutions for energy efficiency

This dynamic interactive session will give you an insider’s look at the European Innovation Council's (EIC) energy efficiency strategy. From supercharging boiler combustion efficiency, to revolutionising lighting with high-efficiency LEDs for buildings and vertical farms, these companies are redefining what is possible in energy efficiency. You will get an insider’s look at the EIC’s strategy, followed by a deep dive into each company’s groundbreaking technology, their impact, and their journey towards commercialisation. 

 

Heating, Ventilation and Cooling

Tuesday 11 June:

16.30 – 18.00: Exploring the heat map: inspiring approaches to sustainable urban heat planning 

The recast Energy Efficiency Directive requires cities with over 45.000 inhabitants to develop local heating and cooling plans. Member states play a crucial role in this process. Since heating and cooling planning is inherently local, due to diverse building types, geology, and heat resources, the involvement of citizens, local businesses, industries, and utilities at the grassroots level, is key to the successful drafting and implementation of strategies.

Wednesday 12 June: 

16.30 – 18.00: District heating and cooling: the neighbourly way to climate neutrality (Online only)

European cities and municipalities will share in this session their energy transition success stories, drawing from relevant EU projects like the Celsius initiative with a diverse array of stakeholders, including European policymakers, representatives from municipalities, DHC utilities, cooperatives, and citizens.

Thursday 13 June: 

9.30 – 11.00: No hot air! The potential of waste heat for decarbonising industry, cities, and buildings (Online only)

The session will demonstrate with best practice examples, how large heat pumps, district heating and cooling networks, use waste heat and contribute to energy-efficient and decarbonised buildings, industry and cities and what measures are needed to unlock the full potential.
