Are heat pumps too expensive?

Is the uptake of heat pumps in Europe influenced by their high costs? Do energy savings they provide worth the expense?
Editorial Team

Despite being criticised for their high costs, heat pumps have gained popularity for their clean energy benefits. These devices extract energy from air, water, or ground and convert it into heat or cool air. In Europe, 3 million heat pump units replaced 4 billion cubic meters of fossil gas, saving 8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Contrary to a common myth, heat pumps function efficiently in cold climates. In fact, countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Estonia, facing harsh winters, do have high heat pump usage. Despite initial expenses, heat pumps prove cost-effective in the long run, saving households up to €840 in Europe, according to a 2022 report.
