The Stephen Taylor Court is a new community of the King´s College in Cambridge. The scheme aimed to create 60 new graduate study rooms and 24 one- and two-bed apartments for Fellows and their families. It has been built to achieve Passivhaus standards and a 100 year design life which was possible through an in-depth technical work on material life, replacement and how to maintain fabric performance. Hence, material sourcing, recycled content and approach to building end of life was considered.

Successful operations include, for example, the re-use of existing roof tiles into the landscape elements of the scheme, and the use of Cross-laminated timber frame (CLT) which allowed for reduction in substructure and use of raft foundation. On another note, the use of Ground source heat pump system (GSHP) and Air source heat pumps system (ASHP), and reversed underfloor heating to cooling space represented a challenge.
